Kindergarten

Welcome to Smith School Kindergarten 2022-2023!

Mrs. Sarah Ramer - Teacher

Smith School is pleased to once again offer full-day Kindergarten, five days per week, for the 2022-2023 school year. We are so excited that we will be able to continue have our students attend for the full week, as it creates even more opportunities for your child to develop literacy, numeracy and social skills which in turn provide a strong foundation for future learning.

Dates & Times

The first day of Kindergarten will be Monday, August 29, 2022. To ease the transition from home to school, students will attend three days a week until after Thanksgiving, then begin attending for the full week starting Tuesday, October 11, 2022.

Volunteering

Once we start our full week schedule and routines are established, we may require some assistance from parent helpers in the classroom. This could be anything from setting out supplies, assisting with crafts and organizing centers, photocopying and writing in agendas, to helping cleaning up after snacks and getting dressed for recess. If you would like to volunteer your time to assist with the Kindergarten program please let Mrs. McConaghy know. All volunteers must have a current criminal record check, which can be obtained from the RCMP at no cost to you. Please see Mrs. McConaghy in the office for a letter request.

Speech & Language, Hearing and Vision Screens

We encourage all parents to visit an Alberta Health Services Unit prior to the start of Kindergarten for a free speech/language, vision and hearing screen. These screens help identify areas of need that may otherwise take longer to identify in the classroom setting. They also provide us time to arrange and coordinate services if required, or make accommodations to best meet the needs of your child. See 'Before Entering Kindergarten' at top left for more information on the back-to-school health checklist.

Your Child's Day!

Good Morning!

Upon hearing the bell, students will wait in line outside the south doors until a staff member lets them in. From here they are taken into the classroom to begin their day. Students should not arrive before 8:30 am unsupervised, as we do not have staff outside at this time.

Recess and Lunch

Students will have three recess breaks during the day. They will be provided with a small early morning snack from our Breakfast For Learning Program. Children are encouraged to have a healthy snack before each recess, one that will help sustain their appetite between breaks. Students will return from their mid-day recess and will eat lunch in the classroom. Lunch break is 11:50 am-12:40pm

Home time!

Students will be dismissed at the south doors at 3:15 pm. A staff member will ensure that they get on the bus safely. If you are picking up your child, please meet them at the south doors. If there are any changes to your child's regular home-time routine, please contact the office, as well as your child's bus-driver (if applicable) and/ or write a note in their agenda.

Student Assessment

Students will be assessed in a variety of ways throughout the in the year. Reports will be sent home indicating how your child is performing. If as a parent you have a question about your child's achievement or development, please feel free to write a note in the agenda, send an email or come in for a visit with the teacher.
