Welcome back to another school year. For our new families, welcome to Smith School! We are honored that you have chosen Smith School as the place to educate your child.
We are pleased to welcome Mr. Daniel Andruik to the teaching staff at Smith School. Mr. Andruik will be teaching social studies 4-7, PE 6/7 and will also be teaching an elective in Trimesters 2 & 3. We are also excited to welcome Mrs. Darice Laughy to our staff as an educational assistant. Come meet them and all the staff at the Parking Lot Party on September 21 from 6 -7:30 pm in the school parking lot.
This school year we continue to focus on improving literacy in our school at all grade levels. We will continue with our Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) program. This year we are growing and there will be a structure LLI time in kindergarten to grade 5 classrooms as well as pull out happening. Mrs. Dixon and Mrs. Beauchamp will continue to support this program along with the classroom teachers in K-5.
We are excited to continue working on our home reading minutes. It is incredibly important for students to be reading a minimum of 15-20 minutes per night at home. Each English Language Arts teacher has established a home reading program so please watch for that to come home. There are many great ways to encourage literacy at home. You can listen to your child read, you can share some reading together, talk about the books that are being read by asking questions like - who is the main character, what was the problem they had to face, how do you think it will end? For more reading tips, please check your home reading packages and talk to your child's teacher. Also watch for students to start sharing their individual, class and school home reading goals. We encourage you to support your child by having them read each night.
Our Parent Lighthouse Team and Smith Parent Lighthouse Fundraising teams will be meeting again on October 4 @ 8:45 am. We encourage you to come join us for the meeting and stay for the training that will start at 10:30.
Good attendance is very important to success at school. We do ask that if your child is away, that you take a few minutes to contact the school to let us know why your child is absent that day. This can be done by calling the school office or leaving a note in your child’s agenda book if you know ahead of time that they will be away. There are many things that happen as part of learning in a classroom that cannot be replicated outside of the school. However, when we know that students will be away, teachers will make every effort to provide them with work to help the stay caught up. If your child needs extra help with something or is struggling with a concept, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. Our wonderful staff is always willing to help out and arrangements for a bit of extra help can be made!
At Smith School, we believe that we are part of a collaborative team. It is important to us to have good working relationships with students, parents and community. Should you ever have questions, a concern or just want to share some good news, please do not hesitate to get in contact with us!
We are looking forward to a fun year filled with great learning opportunities for our students!
Yours in Education,
Mrs. B. Liddell
Principal, Smith School
