Principal's Corner

It is hard to believe that December is already here! It has been a busy start to the school year and we are so glad for the engagement and support of our families.

Our Breakfast for Learning program has seen some enhancements this year thanks to a grant from the Government of Alberta. We have also seen many new and tasty items being served to students under the planning team of Nikita, Mrs. Laughy and Ms. Hensch’s foods class. We are grateful for their organization and commitment to ensuring our students have a healthy snack each morning. The grant requirements have certainly changed how our snack program looks and Nikita has been busy shopping and planning and connecting with Mrs. Laughy, our school liaison, to ensure we have things running smoothly.

The Smith Parent Lighthouse Foundation (SPLF) has also been busy coming up with new ways to support our students. If you are looking to get involved please come out to a meeting or contact Virginia for more information. We would love to have some new members!

Students have been working hard towards their literacy goals and we are very pleased with their commitment. Our school goal for the year is to read 250,000 home reading minutes! Students regularly set smaller individual and class goals as they work towards this total! Keep up the great work on improving literacy!

We are excited to be hosting Tricksters Theater December 18-22. You will not want to miss our dinner and Tricksters Production on December 21! Contact the school to get your tickets for supper. Entry to the performance is free. We will also have a special visitor after the show! This opportunity is provided in large part by a grant from the Government of Alberta’s Artist in Residency Grant.  We also want to thank SPLF for their work with SHARA to provide us with a significant amount of money to cover the remaining balance. We could not provided these outstanding opportunities for our students without so much teamwork!

On behalf of the staff and students at Smith School - we wish you all a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and we look forward to seeing you in 2018!
